Wilson Junior High Lego Team S.O.A.R. (Super Omega Awesome Robots) members Brady Balaban, Zac Hemme, Annika Peters, Logan Reed, McKenzie Schewe, Lucas Smith, and homeschooled student Freddy Harris have built not only an amazing Lego robot, but also friendships on their journey to State Competition.
FIRST Lego League is a hands-on program designed to capture a student’s curiosity and to build skills in the areas of science and technology. Each team is judged on the following: solution to a given research-based challenge, their creative problem solving in the building and programming of their robot, and their gracious professionalism.
S.O.A. R. competed against almost 400 students in 4th thru 8th grade at Sectionals on December 10th in Oshkosh. For their project, they researched gulls and ways to control their numbers in public areas, developing plans for a specialized drone. The team ranked in the top ½ in the robot competition and will be going to the state FLL competition in February because of their high quality performance overall.
The team and their adult mentors Leeann Klein, Travis Klein and John Hemme will continue to meet at school and in the evenings to enhance their presentation and robotics as they prepare for the upcoming competition.
