Grading

As a Science department, we have decided to change the way student performance is communicated to both students and parents in order to make the information more meaningful to everyone.  This shift focuses away from accumulating points in order to earn a particular grade, instead, to achieving proficiency in specific skills or understandings. To do this we will utilize a standards-based system.

Instead of receiving points, a percent, or a letter grade on your assessment, each assessment will be broken down into specific skills or concepts.  Your performance on the skills or concepts will be assigned based on one of the following categories:

Advanced (4)

The student understands all the basic and complex knowledge and skills related to this concept and can apply that to a new problem or situation

Proficient (3)

The student understands all the basic and complex knowledge and skills related to this concept.

Basic (2)

The student understands all the basic, but not the complex knowledge and skills related to this concept.

Developing (1)

The student understands some of the basic knowledge and skills related to this concept.

Beginning (0)

The student is missing all knowledge and skills related to this concept.

Each assessment recorded in Infinite Campus (IC) will be linked to a specific skill or concept and will reflect your proficiency.  This will allow everyone involved to better track your progress, identify strengths and weaknesses, and identify ways to deepen and extend your learning.

At the end of the quarter/semester, you will be assigned a letter grade on your report card, as in the past.  The letter grade will, in all likelihood, be similar to what you would earn in a more traditional grading system.  The difference will be in the meaning which will be more focused and detailed in regards to your understandings and abilities.
