Open Enrollment Registration is Feb 1 - April 30th

Wisconsin’s public school open enrollment program allows students in 4-year-old kindergarten through grade 12 to attend any public school in the state if space is available and subject to certain other restrictions.  There is no tuition cost, but the parent is responsible for transportation.


Parents must apply for open enrollment between February 1st and April 30th, 2021, to have their child enroll in a public school district other than the one in which they live for the 2021-2022 school year.


The best and preferred way to apply for open enrollment is online through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction at https://dpi.wi.gov/oe.  The application form will be available from midnight February 1st, 2021 until 4pm on April 30th, 2021.  If you complete a paper application instead, it must be submitted to the nonresident school district no earlier than February 1st and no later than 4pm on April 30, 2021.  A postmark does not meet this requirement.  


Parents may request a specific school or program, but acceptance is not guaranteed.  Parents will be notified as follows:


  • On or before June 11th, nonresident districts must notify applicants, in writing, whether the applications are approved or denied and must notify parents of approved students of the school or program to which the student is assigned.

  • On or before June 18th, resident school districts must notify applicants, in writing, if the applications are denied.

  • If the application is denied, parents may submit an appeal to the Department of Public Instruction no later than 30 days after the notice of denial is postmarked or delivered to the parent, whichever occurs first.

  • On or before June 25th, the parents whose applications were approved must notify the nonresident district whether the child will indeed attend the nonresident school.  Failure to make this notification may result in the student being unable to participate in open enrollment.
